Who We Are

HSFGR, the Heritage Silky Fainting Goat Registry, is a heritage-focused registry created by a breeder for breeders, families, and farms who love the history, character, and future of the Silky Fainting Goat.

We exist to protect the integrity of these goats, honor the work behind each animal, and keep registration simple, transparent, and fair.

HSFGR was born out of real barn aisles, dusty show rings, kitchen-table conversations, and long phone calls between breeders who wanted better for their goats and their community.

We are not here to erase anyone’s past work. In fact, we honor it by protecting the heritage, breed character, and long-term future of the foundational silky-coated fainting goats that helped shape this population.

What Is a Silky Fainting Goat?

The Silky Fainting Goat is recognized by HSFGR as a heritage, silky-coated variation developed from long-haired Myotonic roots and selected over time for a distinct combination of traits.

Historically, some early silky lines also carried limited Nigerian Dwarf influence alongside a Myotonic foundation. HSFGR acknowledges that as part of the breed’s development history, not as the breed’s defining identity or ongoing direction.

HSFGR does not define the Silky Fainting Goat as a simple cross-breed formula. The type we are focused on preserving grew primarily from Myotonic heritage and character, with breeders selecting for a more refined, flowing, silky-coated outline over generations.

Is the Silky Fainting Goat just a Myotonic × Nigerian cross?

No.

HSFGR does not recognize the Silky Fainting Goat as a simple “Myotonic crossed with Nigerian Dwarf” formula. While some historical Nigerian Dwarf influence may exist in certain early lines, that is not the defining identity of the goat and it is not the direction HSFGR is preserving toward.

Our focus is on Silky Fainting Goats that carry the character, history, and foundation of the Myotonic goat, with a silky coat as a beautiful overlay, not a replacement for correct type.

HSFGR’s Focus

HSFGR places emphasis on:

    • A clear Myotonic foundation and fainting heritage

    • A flowing silky coat as a beautiful overlay, not a substitute for correct type

    • Sound, functional structure with balance, length of body, and capacity

    • Reproductive soundness and long-term usefulness

    • Calm, sensible temperament

    • Thoughtful breeder stewardship

    • Preservation of heritage traits without chasing extremes

Past outside influence is acknowledged as part of breed development history where it exists, but it is not the defining identity or ongoing goal of this registry.

How We Carry This Forward

We accomplish this by:

    • Centering the breed’s defining traits

    • Respecting the people who care for them

    • Building a barn where small farms, youth, and long-time breeders all have a seat at the table

    • Creating records that are clear, useful, and built to last

    • Building a registry that will still make sense 10, 20, and 50 years from now

HSFGR is here for breeders who believe the future of the Silky Fainting Goat should be rooted in history, guided by soundness, and protected with care.

Our Mission

At the Heritage Silky Fainting Goat Registry (HSFGR), our mission is to preserve, promote, and protect the integrity of the Silky Fainting Goat through accurate registration, education, clear standards, and ethical breeding practices.

We are committed to preserving the distinguishing characteristics of these goats, including their silky coat, Myotonic foundation, fainting heritage, sound conformation, and long-term usefulness, with particular emphasis on structural and reproductive correctness.

Through responsible breed stewardship, transparent registry practices, and a heritage-first focus, HSFGR supports breeders who value more than beauty alone. We believe temperament, soundness, genetic health, reproductive reliability, and long-term breed viability all matter.

HSFGR fosters a community rooted in integrity, education, and respect for the history of these goats, while actively supporting youth involvement so the next generation of breeders is equipped to carry this legacy forward with knowledge, responsibility, and pride.

HSFGR also maintains a Founding Herd Preservation Initiative to document historically significant Silky Fainting Goat herds and lines.

HSFGR was founded by Michelle Davis of Goats Rock Ranch in Kansas, a long-time breeder of Mini Silky Fainting Goats who wanted a written, heritage-focused registry rooted in Myotonic foundation, sound structure, and the belief that silky coat is an overlay, not the whole story.
